It’s hard to add new events to the already busy September calendar. It’s the return of activities, meetings and symposiums, and it even looks like everyday life is more stimulating! Ready?
On September 11 and 12, Copibec will be taking part in the second edition of ALL IN, the largest event dedicated to artificial intelligence in Canada, with the second day featuring workshops presented by the Coalition for the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (CDCE).
On September 18, the CDCE will hold its annual general meeting in Ottawa. Since we’ll be in Ottawa, we’ll be taking the opportunity to raise the issue of copyright law reform with the federal government. Everyone has already received our joint brief with Access Copyright on the Fall economic statement, and we hope it hits the mark!
Also, I don’t need to remind you – but I’m doing it anyway – that 2024 is the centenary of the coming into force of the Copyright Act. To mark the occasion, Copibec will be launching its podcast Copyright Act: A Century of Stories on September 19 at the Centennial Symposium of ALAI Canada in Gatineau.
The podcast will be available on our website from September 20. The series, consisting of three episodes in French and English, traces the history of copyright from three angles: power, culture and technology. I hope you’ll enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed creating it, with the team of Denis Martel as producer and Farnell Morisset as animator.
IFRRO
These five letters have monopolized Copibec’s resources over the past few months. IFRRO’s visit to Quebec City from September 30 to October 3 could crown the 100th anniversary of the Copyright Act if Ministers St-Onge and Champagne accept our invitation and, supreme happiness, finally announce the long-awaited reform of the law. To be continued...
I don’t know if I’ve told you this before, but I love the back-to-school season.
Happy back-to-school!
Christian Laforce, General Manager
