2024 will have been an incredible year for Copibec, which explains why you’ve been hearing a lot about us!
Highlights
IFRRO World Congress 2024
We welcomed 158 IFFRO delegates to Quebec City from September 30 to October 3. This was a unique opportunity to inform our opposite numbers about the vagaries of the fair dealing exception in our Copyright Act. Delegates voted unanimously for a resolution of support.
Our podcast “Copyright Act: A Century of Stories”
Unveiled last September as part of ALAI’s centenary symposium, our podcast series has already racked up over 30,000 listens! Join us in February 2025 for three exclusive episodes.
72% increase in declarations
Primary and secondary school teachers made the difference this year, with a notable 72% increase in declarations of works reproduced in the classroom over last year.
New partnerships
With Éducaloi, we create engaging content to simplify understanding of the Copyright Act.
A contest launched in partnership with Culture Montérégie helped raise the profile of local authors and introduce our SAMUEL platform to Montérégie schools.
New agreement with Quebec universities
Quebec universities have signed a new three-year reproduction agreement with Copibec, allowing the use of works while remunerating the creators.
Copibec team expands
Welcome to Pascal Laroche, Business Development Manager! With over 25 years’ experience in the media in Montreal and Paris, plus a distinguished career as a publisher, he brings exceptional expertise to help our projects shine.
Sustained advocacy for copyright reform
Despite an unprecedented mobilization of our various partners, to date there has been no change to the law, but... we have had a motion in the House of Commons from Bloc Québécois MP Martin Champoux. As autumn is still not over, perhaps Minister Chrystia Freeland will announce some measures in her budget statement, scheduled for December 16.
After this date, we’ll see if I still believe in Santa Claus!
Happy Holidays to all!
Christian Laforce, General Manager
